Morning!
If you are on the outer circle today & choosing to participate by posting on the class blog, please adhere to the following expectations:
1. Participate throughout the discussion's duration. I am not looking for a certain number of posts. Afterall, longer posts will take more time to craft than 1-liners. I am looking, instead, to see that you're focused throughout the discussion's duration & you're consistently participating.
2. Link each question or assertion to a quote from the book that inspired it. Let's practice the skill of defending our thinking & grounding it in text. (If you need an example, see the sample question I posted on the fishbowl syllabi.)
3. Carefully proofread your work. Hey, it's English class.
Feel free to vacillate between this role & joining the inner circle.
Happy discussing!
What are some motifs that you notice in the book?

ReplyDeleteI was talking with one of my coworkers and we were talking about TKR and she brought up the topic that maybe since Amir was only 12, would he recognize what Assef was doing?
ReplyDeleteGood question, it probably depends on what kinds of things Amir was exposed to and whether or not his father has talked to him about those things or friends or others.
DeleteIs it Baba's fault that Amir is the way he is? Or is it Amir's own fault?
ReplyDeleteI think that Baba is a contributor to how Amir acts just because of how he neglects him and how much Amir respects him.
DeleteWhy is it that the father of Soraya's and Baba have to meet about Amir taking her hand? Do you think that is has to do with a piece of their cultural and cultural tradition?

ReplyDeleteWhy do you think Hassan was the one who had to work to mend the relationship between him and Amir when he wasn't the one in the wrong?
ReplyDeleteI think this has to due with Amir's guilt, he didn't want to take responsibility for what happened to Hassan. He found it easier to ignore Hassan, than face what happened and mend the friendship.
DeleteHow do you think Amir's mother dying affected the way Baba acted towards AMir
ReplyDeleteWhy do you think it was so difficult for Amir to show Hissan affection? Do you think it has to do with pride or something similar to that? Maybe since Babe is cold towards Amir, Amir is cold towards Hissan, sort of a chain reaction.
ReplyDeleteAll Amir really knew about love was from his father, who was cold and distant. I believe it is part of the reason why he is so mean to Hassan.
DeleteThat still doesn't excuse how he acted. Just because he didn't have a loving father, doesn't mean he can't be a loving person.
I think that Amir's mother dying at child birth, made Baba dislike Amir more because Baba might see it as Amir "killed" his wife and that is a huge reason as to why Baba isn't the best father towards Amir. But we know that he has the characteristics to be a great father figure because he shows it towards Hissan.
ReplyDeleteYea I agree, but Amir knows that his father may think that and that would contribute to why Amir is always trying to be a good son to his father.
DeleteI also agree. Since Amir's mother dies it really impacted the father and I noticed that Baba drinks a lot maybe that was an effect of his wife dying.
DeleteAmir is a good reminder and a bad reminder to Baba at the same time. Baba is reminded that Amir was the reason his wife died, but Amir is also a part of his wife and could be seen as a gift to Baba before she passed away.
